Flatulence ( Nafakh-i Mi‘da)

  • It is the excessive production and accumulation of Riyāh (Gases) in the stomach leading to abdominal distension.
  • It is caused by Sū’-i Mizāj Bārid (Cold morbid temperament) and its Zu‘f-i Harārat Gharīziyya (Weakness of innate heat) of stomach. It is also caused by the use of flatulent and other foods which are difficult to be digested.
  • It is characterized mainly by flatulence, Qarāqir (rumbling), feeling of heaviness in the abdomen, gastralgia and belching.

  • Hiltīt (Asafoetida) diluted in vinegar and soaked in sponge may be kept over the abdomen.
  • Application of any hot oil on stomach.
  • Powder of Khulanjān (Alpinia galanga, Willd.), mixed with honey and Sakbīnaj (Ferula persica, Willd.) may be used orally.
  • Hot & Dry fomentation with following drugs:
  • Namak Khurdanī (Common salt), Zīra (Carum carvi, Linn.), Ajwā’in (Trachyspermum ammi, Linn.) tied in a pouch after heating, may be kept on stomach.

Compound drugs:

Jawārish Kamūnī 4.5 gm. after meal along with lukewarm water
Jawārish Falāfilī 3 gm. after meal
Jawārish-i Anjadān 10.5gm. after meal
Jawārish-i Sa‘tar 3-4 gm. after meal
Jawārish-i Pudīna 7-10 gm. after meal
Jawārish-i ‘Ambar 4.5gm. after meal
  • Aghziya Mubakhkhira-The foods liable to produce flatus and vapours e.g. cabbage, pea, brinjal, cauliflower, beans, turnip, etc.

 

  • Hammām (Bath) and Riyāzat Kasīra (Frequent exercise) before taking food.
  • Massage of hot oil on upper abdomen.
  • Hot & Dry fomentation.
  • Aghziya Latīfa-Food stuffs which are easy to digest but have little nutritional value,and produce such a sanguine which is normal in viscosity. These are of two types i.e. Mahmuda (That produce good humour)and Ghayr Mahmuda (That produce morbid humour) e.g. garlic, radish, spicy and salty foods,etc.
  • Muwallid-i Riyāh Aghziya to be avoided.
